In the first 3 seconds of the trailer we see the production
companies which have been given a rusty metal look. This is because a lot of
metal is used during the trailer. The colours are very earthy such as browns
and yellows which are used throughout the trailer. Warner Bros is a hugely
successful production company with many popular films including San Andreas
(2015) and Gravity (2013) therefore attracting viewers who have enjoyed their
previous films. As the Village Roadshow Pictures logo is being shown the sound
of an engine starting is in the background. This sound is used because many
vehicles are used throughout the film and the sound of the engine starting
suggests the beginning of a conflict.
The screen then goes
blank and a voiceover can be heard saying “my world is fire and blood” followed
by many news reports outlining the problems of the world itself: combat over
gasoline, and water wars. Whilst we hear the news reports there is an
establishing shot of the desert where the movie is set. There is also an image
of the villains worshipping their religious symbol. A dark blue filter is used
to show darkness and a contrast with the bright colours of the desert in the
previous clip.
In the next shot we
see red flares being released as a signal of danger. We can also see many vehicles
chasing one lone front-runner. This conforms to the common convention of action
films having car chases.
This shot fades to black and then we see the villains preparing
for battle. The colours here are also very earthy with browns, oranges and
reds. This shot also conforms to the common conventions of action films having
many vehicles and weapons. In addition to this the only sound we can hear is of
the vehicles driving past.
We then see a close up shot of Tom
Hardy, who plays the protagonist Max, and has been in many other popular films
such as Inception (2010) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Therefore, attracting
more viewers who have enjoyed his acting in other films. This also conforms to
the common conventions of males being the protagonist in Action films.
This shot is then
followed by an explosion which is the first of many during this trailer. We
then see a villain with a mask on followed by the screen fading to black with a
deep male voiceover, sounding worried, saying “everybody has gone out of their
minds”. This entices the audience to want to know more.
This is followed by more explosions, car chases and
fighting. The shot below is accompanied by some fast pace classical music which
suddenly stops and we hear the explosion.
The trailer includes
text which is also describing the world the film is set in. These can entice
people to watch the film as they begin to wonder what happens in a world
without hope, law and mercy. The only way they can find out is by watching the
film. The text is in orange with an effect to make it look like an explosion is
happening in each of the letters. Further emphasising that this is an action
film.
The trailer then speeds up with fast pace classical music and
drums. Lots of quick shots of different scenes are shown. We see the different characters
and lots more action. There is also a female protagonist which subverts the
common representations of only males normally being the heroes. However, we
also see some girls who are vulnerable and need protecting therefore conforming
to the conventions of action films.
We also see more common props that are used in action films
such as guns and rope.
We then see the names of the main actors: Tom Hardy (shown
above), Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult this encourages people who have enjoyed their acting in previous films to go and watch this one. The same typography is used
throughout the trailer. After this we see mass destruction which conforms to
common conventions of the action genre. Finally, the release date is shown so
that people have enjoyed the trailer they can go and watch the full movie.
