Deconstruction of Locations

Some locations that slasher horror films are normally set in include:

  • Woods
    • Woods can set a tone of darkness and mystery.
    • They are often dark, isolated and hard to navigate which is perfect for slasher horror films as the victim cannot escape.
    • The killer can stay hidden easily in the woods therefore it can be good for jump scares.
    • Sounds in the woods can be eerie such as rustling and wind so it fits in well with the horror genre.
    • Silhouettes and shadows can easily be created to add to the eeriness.
    • Locations in the woods often use tents and cabins which are both open to attack.
Examples of horror films set in the woods:

'Cabin in the woods'    'The Blair Witch Project'               'Mama'
  • Houses
    • Houses can make the the film seem more realistic and allows the viewer to relate to the setting therefore creating more emotions such as empathy and fear.
    • Houses also use many everyday items which the viewers can also relate to.
    • Often the house has no land line or internet therefore the people have nowhere to run to.
Examples of horror films set in houses:

'The Conjuring'             'Dream House'            'The Strangers'
  • Graveyards
    • Graveyards are associated with death and spirits which link in with the horror genre.
    • They are often eerie and dark places in horror films and set a tone of darkness and evil.
    • Graveyards can be isolated and quiet therefore the victim cannot escape and there is no way of contacting anyone.
Examples of horror films set in graveyards:

           'Poltergeist'
