Deconstruction of Slasher Horror Trailers

Scream 4 - 2011

Green Band Movie Promotion -  0:00 - 0:01

This establishes the rating of the trailer and thus, the audience suitability. Despite being listed as suitable for age 15 and over, the green band promotion suggests that the trailer itself is suitable for audiences of any age. Editors often do this for teaser trailers as the aim is to create enigma and thus, as few violent/scary scenes as possible would be included.

Film Production Company: Dimension Films - 0:03 - 0:05

Dimension films are a hugely successful American film production company, initially specialising in primarily horror motion pictures. Displaying the production company at the beginning of the trailer can help to identify the genre, even though this movie is a franchise and hence the genre would be recognised. Therefore, viewers watching the trailer would instantly know whether the upcoming film would be one that they would enjoy or not, particularly if they have liked other films by the same company.

Enigmatic Sentence: "One Movie Redefined Fear" - 0:23 - 0:25

Many movie trailers include cuts of brief sentences regarding the narrative of the film in order to create enigma for the audience and make them want to watch the film. The sentence used above suggests a scarier experience than the other films in the franchise, potentially appealing to a wider audience. In terms of typography, the font used is Sans-Serif, which correlates with the modern take on the films; additionally, the colours used are red, white and black - the typical colours used in horror movies, particularly Slasher horror as red often signifies blood.

Enigmatic Sentence: "From Master of Suspense, Wes Craven" - 0:35 - 0:37

This particular statement identifies the director of the movie; for audiences watching the trailer, they would be able to associate the director with other films they may have seen and enjoyed, and thus, concluding whether this film would be of interest to watch. The typography of this statement is the same as the example above.

Enigmatic Sentence: "Comes a New Generation of Terror" - 0:42 - 0:44

The use of the word 'Generation' relates back to the previous films within the Scream franchise, suggesting that this next instalment is going to be bigger, better and scarier. Viewers who have seen the previous films would know whether they would enjoy this film as they would know what the narrative was for previous instalments; for this reason, the enigmatic sentences are usually short and to the point. Similarly to before, the typography is the same for this cut.

Title Sequence: "Scream 4" - 1:14 - [Part 2]

Finally, at the end of the film, the title of the movie is displayed; this is to inform the viewer of the film name should they wish to see it once it has been released. Similarly to the enigmatic sentences, the font is basic Sans-Serif to correspond with the narrative of the movie. The colours are white on a black background, firstly to contrast and make the title stand out but to also represent the black and white mask the Scream killer wears. Behind the text is the beginning of a silhouette, which is explored in the next screenshot.

Title Sequence: "Scream 4" - [Part 1] - 1:18

Shown is the transition from the title Scream, to the 'A' transforming into a red '4', to identify the number instalment, with the red signifying the blood common in Slashers. Behind the title appears to be a silhouette illuminated by spotlights in the back ground of the Scream killer. This instils fear for the viewer as it is as though the killer is watching them, creating a sense of realism.

Release Date: "4.15.11" - 1:21 - [Part 2]

These next two screenshots show the transition into the release date. The release date is an important feature of a movie trailer as it enables viewers to see when they will be able to watch the film in the Cinema, should they enjoy the trailer. The typography is the same used for the title that is detailed above.

Release Date: "4.15.11" - [Part 1] - 1:23

Similarly to in the title sequence, the '4' month of the date (since the trailer is American) changes into the blood red colour to signify the gore. This also highlights the fact that this particular film is the fourth instalment of a successful Slasher film series, reminding the audience of the upcoming film.

Scream 4 Teaser Trailer

The Strangers - 2008

Green Band Movie Promotion - 0:00 – 0:05

This also establishes the rating of the trailer and audience suitability, similarly to in Scream 4. The film itself is also a 15 and therefore not suitable for children under that age, however, the green band suggests that the trailer has been edited so that it is suitable. Editors often do this for teaser trailers as the aim is to create enigma and thus, as fewer violent/scary scenes as possible would be included.

Film Production Company: Rogue Pictures (Rogue) - 0:05 – 0:08

Rogue Pictures is a Motion Pictures production company owned by Relativity Media, which specialises in action, thriller and urban features; the Strangers is a Slasher Horror and thus could fall into the thriller genre. Production companies are often listed at the beginning of a trailer in order for the audience to instantly recognise whether the upcoming film is one of which they would enjoy. For example, if a viewer has seen another film by the same production company and enjoyed it, chances are that they would enjoy the upcoming one also.

Film Production Company: Intrepid Pictures - 0:08 – 0:09

Intrepid Pictures is another motion picture production company which joined forces with Rogue Pictures in 2005 to co-produce and co-finance a collection of films over 5 years. During the time that the Strangers was made, this production company was still fairly new and not many viewers may have recognised them; for this reason, this sequence was played after the more famous Rogue Pictures.

Enigmatic Statements:

The Strangers film trailer features a sequence of pictures with enigmatic statements captioned below. The sequence follows Todorov's theory of equilibrium as the images and captions start out calm and, in a sense, normal, but then increase in horror as they continue, evident by the colours of the images going from high saturation and suburban looking to dark harsh lighting with red scrawled over the top. The trailer then starts again with a moment calm and the process repeats footage wise.

"Most People Choose a Home" 0:10 – 0:14

The Images start out mundane and calm, creating enigma as to what the film is about.

"For the Neighbourhood" 0:14 – 0:16

"Or the Schools" 0:16 – 0:18

"Or the Size" 0:18 – 0:21

"But Some People" 0:21 – 0:22

This image and caption suggests the start of the change of equilibrium and creates enigma for the audience as they would be wondering what was coming next and thus, what the trailer would be like. Using the collective term of "People" creates a sense of realism for the audience, making them feel targeted and more involved - a common feature in horror movies.

"Choose a House" 0:22 – 0:24

By this image and caption, the lighting of the images begins to change saturation, become more darker and starting to look more sinister. This implies to the viewer that something bad is going to happen, creating tension and suspense. Additionally, the red scribbles begin to appear on this image, suggesting the narrative is going to be associated with a house and the red implying blood and gore.

"For a Completely" 0:24 – 0:25

As the sequence continues, the images being to get darker and more sinister looking. This begins to create a more eerie atmosphere and sets the scene for the remainder of the trailer.

"Different" 0:25 – 0:27

The next two images and captions use one word sentences to further build the tension for the audience. The contrast of the white on the black also emphasises the word as singular, making it seem more important and significant in the narrative of the story. It is also the part where the title sequences meets its climax, in terms of Todorov's theory.

"Reason" 0:27 – 0:29

The final image is barely visible due to the low saturation lighting and the red scrawl is much more pronounced. This implies to the viewer that the film (trailer) is going to be based around a targeted house and since it is a horror movie, in the dark.

Movie Title: "The Strangers" - 1:05 – 1:08

By the end of the trailer, the movie title is displayed for audiences to know for if they want to see the film. Titles are usually displayed at the end as it becomes the more memorable feature and does not give any information away compared to if it was to be shown first. In terms of typography, the text is of similar colour to the masks the killers wear in the trailer. Additionally, the text is basic Sans-Serif, due to the modern narrative of the film. The background of this sequence appears to be a hand print on a misted window; this creates the idea of being watched, creating suspense and putting the audience on edge.

Final Statement - 1:08 – 1:09

Although the statement is fictional in itself, the fact that the directors and writers attempt to play the movie off as true makes the whole experience of the movie seem more real and thus scarier when the audience watches it. Seeing this appear on the trailer may peak the audiences interest as they may want to find out what happened to the characters - did they survive? The typography is similar to that of the title, however, the black background adds contrast and makes the statement stand out.

Actor List - 1:12 – 1:14

Some viewers may be enticed by a movie trailer if they see actors that they have liked in previous films and so think that they may enjoy this one; this means that the actors are displayed at the end of the film as a means of promotion and advertising. This is often executed as Slasher horrors tend to have similar plots and thus, producers and directors want to make their film stand out more.
