Slasher Horror Costume Deconstruction

The Killer

 

• The most common feature of the killers costume in the slasher genre is the mask. This mask conceals the identity of the person. Normally the mask is plain with eye holes, in some cases there may also be a hole for the mouth,
• There are normally no patterns or markings on the mask and the killer is normally seen wearing the same mask throughout the film.

• The mask is usually paired with casual clothes and nothing too far fetched as they want to make it close to reality. 
• They may wear a suit, leather jacket or a t-shirt and jeans.
• Some of the clothes may be seen with blood stains, mud and rips.
• The mask also enables the audience to distinguish between the villain and the victims.

Victims

 

•  The victims are also seen in casual clothes. The clothes may be used to identify the personality of the character.
• The picture on the left shows the characters in 'The Cabin In The Woods' they are all wearing jeans and a top.
• They normally have clean clothes at the beginning and by the end their clothes may be torn, blood stained or dirty after the action has occurred.

• The use of casual clothes means that the victims are normal members of the public. This then makes the audience think that any of the events in the film could also happen to them.
