Theatrical Vs. Tease Sinister

Theatrical Trailer

0:06 - 0:24
The theatrical trailer opens with an old fashioned film with characters that appear to be similar to those within the film Sinister. This short clip of the boys watching the horror film foreshadows what is going to happen throughout the rest of the film and gives the audience insight that this is a horror film. During this sequence you are able to see the camera zoom out of the television to reveal an old styled TV, during this the mother figure is shown to turn off the TV and say "I don't want you watching stuff like that before bed okay?", this is the footage from the film however is overlapped with her sending the children to bed. As she puts them to bed there is mainly use of long shots and calm music with what sound to be like crickets in the background. As she puts them to bed the music slowly begins to become louder and creates more suspense.

0:25 - 0:29
During this clip the camera is tilted to the side and uses the tracking technique as the boy gets up out of bed. As he walks down stairs the camera appears to be twisting and moving upwards distorting the image further and show the disorientation in which the child would be feeling. When there is a transaction the footage appears to be layered over the top of one another and suggests how it is one continuous movement.

0:29 - 0:33
Suddenly after having 29 sections of calm and slow music they introduce a jump scare through the use of non diegetic loud sound which is quickly followed by sting instruments increasing in volume. This helps create suspense while on screen the audience is only slightly able to see the figure of the man standing in front of the boy.

0:34 - 0:35
The typography of the text is consistent throughout the trailer with the same white and faded background, this style suggests possession with the white background that conveys the idea of innocents and purity while the darkness that appears to be covering it shows the evil in which is trying to take over. The text with a serif font suggests that the genre of this film is a possession as the older styled text is regularly seen within this genre. The theatrical trailer informs the audience that Sinister is created by the same producer as three extremely popular horror films and shows who the intended target audience is.

0:48 - 0:50
The use of children being the possessed/ evil ones which contrasts to the idea of young people being innocent, this is a common convention to use young actors within films like these due to their innocent child appearances as people do not suspect them. However this scene shows the children taking the boy and showing him the videos of them murdering their families. The background is completely black with only the children visible, it create a sense of isolation and being trapped. Not only this the camera is placed lower down which would be a point of view shot from the child within the bed. There is an echoing tin sound that resonates throughout this sequence helping to create suspense and the suspicion of danger. There is also non diegetic sound of "Here comes the boogeyman" which plays scattered thoughout the trailer. This sound is a complete contrast as in to what can be seen on screen and creates a more disturbing effect.

1:21 - 1:27
"There are always three things in common; a murdered family, a house and some form of offering" These are three common conventions within the horror genre and the narrating voice tells the audience this, during the dialogue this image of the house is shown. This is what people would consider the 'perfect family home' however this style of house is regularly seen in horror films. Once again the colour white is used to portray the purity and this house would be seen as the 'American Dream' which only conveys how unattainable the American dream is and contrasts to the darkness within the film.

1:38
This shows the link to religion which is shown throughout the possession sub horror genre, the image is also used in order to create a jump scare for the audience as the main antagonist appears to come out of the image and become real. With the fast editing and the non diegetic sound they successfully create an effective jump scare.

2:07 - 2:20
As the pace and the intensity of the trailer increases the music reverts back to the children's song "Here comes the boogeyman", the song is played over disturbing images such as people dying, children who have died and finally the boy being caught. During this sequence the song loops as if stuck on "catch you if he can" which increases the pace of the trailer and helps create suspense through the repetition and the repeated part of the song shortens to "catch you" before ending on the sound of the mother screaming and the sound of an old movie film.

2:24 - 2:27

The title is shown with the same typography as all the text throughout the trailer however the sides of the background have now started to crack away possibly suggesting that the darkness behind the purity is escaping and emerging. There is the sound light and soft music which is completely calm. However the sound is suddenly interrupted by a loud bass sound with sudden visial also creates an effective jump scare.

The billings block is shown at the very end giving the production companies in which created it and also the actors who are featured within the film. Also at the bottom there is a Facebook page showing that if you want to find out more you are able to see all the new and updated information there.

Teaser Trailer

0:00 - 0:01
Starts with a loud sound which would likely be created from a drum to grab the audiences attention and shows a typical family moving in to a new home, the house seen within this is very similar to the one seen within the other trailer. This house is also white which can also symbolise the innocents which was previously seen within the other video, however this time there is also red on the house, this could possibly link to the idea of blood and death that happens within the film.

0:02 - 0:03
There is a sudden glitch effect that suddenly changes to the children in the field, the children are very pale and appear to be watching the people move in to the house. This suggests that they are going to be the new victims of the villain. When looking closer at the glitch effect you are able to see that there wasn't a glitch but a small clip of the symbol from the film.

0:03 - 0:05
You are able to see the face of the villain momentarily as not to show the full face in detail, it also helps create enigma as to who the killer actually is. The character is surrounded in darkness, the black colours surrounding him show that he is the main antagonist within the film. With the back lighting it helps to hide the facial features of the character. There is also a voice over saying "Tell anyone..." the voice is of a child which also makes the fear more intense as children are seen as more innocent and pure.

0:04 - 0:07
Once again there is footage of the 'happy family lifestyle', this helps create sympathy towards the family and what they're about to experience. Not only this the use of the hand held camera and the hiding within the grass suggests that someone is watching them further creating suspense. During this scene the voice over continues with the child's voice saying "...and he'll kill you and your whole family"

0:08 - 0:10
The following scenes show you kids sitting down and watching an old video through a projector, it shows dead people lying in a circle surrounding a pot. This shows that there are supernatural or possession elements to the film as symbols and rituals would be performed. Scenes such as this were also shown within the main theatrical trailer however these clips are much shorter and holds more narrative speech saying "...and watch the film over...". At the end of the scene all the children are shown to be above the camera and 'sh'ing the audience, this helps create tension and reduce the speed of the pace through the trailer.

0:12 - 0:16
At the end of the trailer the title appears with the narrator whispering "and over" this is a very haunting effect and is very effective for this short but full of suspense trailer. The title at the end is the same as the title within the other trailer and this shows the continuity of the production company. However within this trailer you have very little information concerning the film whereas in the other you were able to identify the companies/ actors/ facebook page and release dates. This trailer has only the title given to the audience, I think that as this is the second film within this franchise it would appeal to a large amount of the audience who saw the original film and allows them to make their own research in to the new release.
