Deconstruction of Age Ratings

All films include age ratings to make sure the audience are aware of what they are watching . The BBFC have created several age ratings which are as follows:


Examples of films
 
U Rated Films
These films are suitable for whole families to watch and a lot of them are animated. 
    - 'Toy Story 3' - According the BBFC website it 'contains mild violence and scary scenes'.
    - 'Wall-E'- According to the BBFC it contains 'very mild threat and violence'.

PG Rated Films
This rating suggests that some scenes may be may not be suitable for children. However, 'a PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older'.
    - 'The Chronicles Of Narnia- Prince Caspian' - According to the BBFC 'contains moderate fantasy          battle violence and threat'.
    - 'Bedtime Stories'- According to the BBFC 'contains mild language and comic slapstick violence'.
12/12A Rated Films
A 12 rated film is limited to DVD and Blu-ray meaning that retailers are not allowed to sell or rent films to people under the age of 12. A 12A rated film means a child under the age of 12 may view the film in a cinema if accompanied by an adult.
   - 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' - According to the BBFC 'contains moderate violence, threat'
   - 'Killers'- According to the BBFC's website 'contains one use of strong language, moderate violence and sex references'

15 Rated Films
People under the age of 15 are not permitted to see these films as they may contain ' strong violence, frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***'), portrayals of sexual activity, strong verbal references to sex, sexual nudity, brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence, discriminatory language or behaviour and drug taking.
    - ' Kingsman: The Secret Service'- According to the BBFC contains 'strong bloody violence, strong        language'
    - 'The Hunger Games'- According to the BBFC 'contains strong violence and threat'
 
18 Rated Films
These films are only permitted to be seen by people aged 18 and over.
    - 'Texas Chainsaw'- According to the BBFC 'contains strong bloody violence and gory images'
    - 'The Wolf of Wall Street'- According to the BBFC contains 'very strong language, strong sex, hard drug use'
