Lighting in filming

During the scene in which the villain pulls the female victim in to the darkness we had to consider the lighting that we wanted in this situation, We wanted to have the light specifically located on the female victim so the audience can not see behind/ around her. This creates a more issolated feeling and helps to produce an egnigma for the audience within the trailer.
When creating the lighting we experimented with different studio lighting equipment, we used barn doors to choose the section in which we wanted to light up and blocked the light traveling past the model. However when doing this the light was too bright and did not convey the cold and mysterious mood in which we wanted to create.
These are the barn doors that we
used to practic making the correct effect.
After this we experimented with the soft box to dim the light and placed it just bellow the villain so that the light only faced up and didnt show the background. This wasnt very effective as the light was still too bright and you were able to clearly see the antagonist in the back of the shot. However it did create the right colour lighting that we wanted as it creates a soft tone and lighted the victims face clearly.
Softbox is a piece of equipment that casts
smooth and proffesional lighting
Finally after practicing with the equipment we came to the conclusion that we wanted a light that would be hand held and would convey the idea that she is holding a torch. We also choose this idea as the victim will be able to drop the light in the panic, in doing so the light would automantically go out. Sadly due to the lighting equipment being exptreamily expensive we werent able to use it for this technique, therefore we used the light from a mobile phone. It was effective as cast shadows in the correct places to help build suspence. Not only this, she was able to drop in on to a padded surface that we had created in order to keep the technology safe. In doing so we also found that in many retakes the phone would slightly bounce on the surface and create a slight flash back up at the model as she dissapears in to the darkness. This was our most effective piece and was used in the final product.
